Many of the materials used in dentistry contain metal and metal alloys. Today, the use of non-allergenic materials with high biocompatibility has increased for people with metal allergy. Among these biocompatible materials are zirconium implants, zirconium ceramics, glass ceramics, biohpp and visiolign composite materials (in implant solutions).
Amalgam fillings are filling materials containing mercury, which dentists often used in the past. Due to the mercury in its content, it is not preferred anymore due to allergic reactions and mercury toxicity. However, it is also undesirable for other metal ions in amalgam to corrode with oral fluids and mix into oral tissues. For these reasons, composite fillings or preferably ceramic-composite (inlay / onlay) fillings are used instead of amalgam.
Albeit very rarely, an allergic reaction may develop against the polyether impression material used when taking impression for prosthesis. Today, measurements to be taken from allergic people can be taken digitally easily thanks to intraoral scanners.
Although acrylic material is used in palate prostheses, it can cause allergies in some bodies. In such cases, special materials prepared with thermopress technology are used as an alternative to acrylic in the production of palate prostheses.
Although very rare, a reaction to local anesthesia can occur. The appropriate anesthetic material can be detected with the allergy test. It becomes impossible to treat people who react to all kinds of local anesthesia, especially in deep caries under normal conditions, considering the pain threshold of the patient. With Er:YAG lasers, caries treatment procedures can be performed by reducing the pain by 90-95%, thus enabling people to be treated without fear.
