Dental Radiology and Imaging

The use of imaging methods during diagnosis, treatment plan and follow-up of treatment in oral and dental health is essential for success.

For this purpose, two-dimensional imaging radiographs and three-dimensional tomographs can be used.

Where Is Dental Radiology and Imaging Used?

  • Detection of caries
  • Before and during root canal treatment
  • Detecting bone damage in cases with advanced gum disease
  • Pre-implant surgery planning and follow-up of treatment
  • In joint disorders
  • In case of cysts and tumors related to teeth and bones
  • Determining the position of the impacted tooth before surgical procedures
  • In orthodontic treatment, in determining the relationship between the jaws and teeth and determining the treatment method.
  • In the detection of salivary gland diseases
  • Following the tooth development and growth of children
  • In suspicion of tooth and jaw fracture

Two-dimensional images are obtained in dental radiographs. There are basically two types:

a) Periapical X-rays: These are the periapical (small) X-rays that have been used in classical dentistry for many years. These x-rays provide a two-dimensional but clear view of small areas. They are used for diagnosis of root canal treatment and regional problems.

b) Panoramic X-rays: It is a two-dimensional imaging system that can view all teeth and jaw bones together. It is preferred when we want to see all teeth in a single plan, but it cannot show every area as clearly as a periapical x-ray. The experience of the person taking the x-ray increases the success.

 

Two-dimensional images are obtained in dental radiographs. There are basically two types:

Three-dimensional images are obtained, which provide more detailed and accurate information than x-rays.

In particular, it is possible to see the hard tissues (tooth and bone tissues) in more detail. In this way, the margin of error and inaccuracy in the treatment plan can be minimized.

Generally, they are used extensively in advanced dental problems and implant planning. It is especially appropriate to use impacted wisdom teeth that need to be determined in relation to the nerve for extraction treatments, root canal treatments that have difficulty in determining the number of canals, cysts and lesions whose location and size are desired to be determined, and for advanced surgical procedures such as orthognathic surgery.

It is very important to visualize the area to be worked before implant and surgical treatment. Since three-dimensional imaging methods show the condition of the jaw bones very clearly, they contribute to the correct planning before starting the surgery.

Detailed information about the thickness, shape, interrelationships and even bone density of the tissues is obtained. Thus, it can be determined which surgical techniques will be used and exactly what can be done before starting the procedure.

With the updated new software , it is possible to ensure the correct positioning of the procedure by preparing a guide plate before any kind of surgery (implant positioning, removal of root tip cysts, cyst operations).

By using three-dimensional imaging, it will be possible to prepare the prostheses before the implants are made, and to make the implants using guide plates at the planned point, and to place the ready-made prosthesis immediately.
